CT Mobile Food Pantry and Feeding the Hungry
For several years now, an anonymous donor makes it possible for CT Food Bank to send their mobile food pantry to Ridgefield the second Friday of every month. Each month, anywhere from 120-170 families and individuals come to our church parking lot to meet the mobile food pantry and to gather food. The anonymous donor stipulates that no information about recipients can be gathered. This allows people to receive food no matter where they reside, enabling access for residents here and those in surrounding towns.
Due to Good Friday falling on the second Friday of April and the high level of restriction for social distancing due to COVID19, March was our most recent CT Mobile Food Pantry event in Ridgefield. The department of social services is not sure when the next opportunity will be for us to have it here in town - perhaps June or July.
Obtaining or Supporting Ridgefield Food Supply
Tony Philips and Karen Gaudian of Ridgefield Department of Social Services report that the town food pantry is available for residents. We can access the food pantry on weekdays by calling town hall and arranging to meet Karen Gaudian for grocery store gift cards. If you'd like to support the food pantry, here are the preferred donations at this time:
1) Cash/Check donations enable the dept. to purchase large amounts of Caraluzzi's and Stop & Shop gift cards at a 5% discount rate.
2) Gift Cards to grocery stores
3) Gift cards to local restaurants and Nature's Temptation (These have been a delightful gift for people, while also supporting local businesses)
All gifts can be sent directly to Department of Social Services or dropped off at the yellow box outside the police station. Tony & Karen report almost $20,000 in gift cards have been distributed during this pandemic up to this point and the needs continue.
Meals on Wheels is also a local resource to sign up to receive meals or to make donations in support of their work to feed Ridgefield residents.
CT Food Bank and the Mobile Food Pantry continue to serve throughout the state, including Danbury, Bethel, Bridgeport, to name a few. For information on food distribution locations nearby or to make a donation, please go to CT Food Bank website.
